| Zavite wins the Auckland Cup |
Tough stayer Zavite has added the $NZ 1 million Group I Auckland Cup to his resume after proving much too good for his rivals at Ellerslie on Wednesday.
Ridden back in the field by jockey Damien Oliver, Zavite made his move before the home turn and was much too strong in the straight, winning from Booming and Tin Goose. The victory was Zavite’s 10th in his 50 start career and took his earning to just shy of $2 million.
It was also the second time the Zabeel entire has won over two miles after claiming last year’s Group II Adelaide Cup.
Zavite is now expected to return to Sydney to contest the Group I Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on March 24.
The victory was the fourth Group I win of the season for Zavite’s trainer Anthony Cummings.
