| Mafia Miss chasing Slipper start |
Randwick trainer Grahame Begg is eagerly awaiting Mafia Miss’s return to the races on Saturday in the Listed Widden Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
The two-year-old filly turned in a cracking debut when coming from last before going down narrowly in the Gimcrack Stakes back in October.
An excellent performance in a recent trial and solid efforts in the dark at Randwick trackwork has Begg excited about his filly’s progress as she charges towards the rich juvenile features during the autumn.
“She’s stepped up to the mark,” Begg said.
“It looks like she’s come back in really good order.
“She’s going well and we’re certainly hopeful she’ll measure up to the Slipper.”
Mafia Miss galloped over 800 metres on the Randwick dirt track on Tuesday morning and she stopped the clock at 50.60 seconds with her final 200 metres covered in a slick 11.30 seconds.
“She’s coming along nicely,” Randwick clocker Craig Tompson said.
“She’s definitely in the top bracket of babies at Randwick but only time will tell if she’s up to the Slipper.
“She certainly won’t be out of place in the lead-ups.” Click here to see what Grahame Begg thinks of his stable runners at Randwick and Moonee Valley on Saturday.
