Time for Turffontein’s luck to change

Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings believes an even share of luck will see his proven Group I sprinter Turffontein figuring strongly in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Cummings said Turffontein had only been to Moonee Valley on one other occasion when finishing a luckless seventh, 2.5 lengths, behind Danleigh in the Manikato Stakes last year.

“He paid full penalty for an outside gate and had a chequered passage the whole way through, checking off heels to the line,” Cummings said.

“He’s up to the standard certainly and will handle the track given a decent barrier.”

Cummings sent Turffontein to Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning to gallop with Seeking Attention and the pair worked home the final 400 metres in 24.34 seconds.

“He worked well, he only dashed up the last little bit,” Melbourne trackman Warren Huntly said.

“I thought he looked and worked particularly well.”

Rain is forecast in Melbourne for most of the week that would suit Turffontein.
